This was an event I really wanted to see. Before I moved to what I will affectionately call the greater Parkdale Area this year, (I'm really more accurately in Brockton Village) I had known of the pride Parkdalians had for their community. At this time I was following news about the development of the Parkdale Neighbourhood Land Trust, a community driven initiative for to grow neighbourhood-controlled land holdings to ensure land availability for affordable housing and cultural spaces. It seemed like a really interesting initiative but they were still looking for their first project at the time.
So when I came across this in article in the Star talking about the first PNLT holding I really wanted to check it out. PNLT received a land donation and hosted a fundraiser to secure the remainder of the land. The project is a community garden run by Tibetan seniors that was on a private lot. The Milkyway Garden as it's called is located off a quiet laneway south of the rush on Queen Street. On the evening of the fundraiser it offered a breezy quiet spot, a great sanctuary in the neighbourhood.
Through the coordination of the PNLT and Greenest City, the community successfully raised the required $175,000 for the land and 5 years of stewardship. Looking forward to seeing this garden flourish and whatever project comes next for PNLT.
